Sugar is one of the strategic food commodities that receives great attention at the global and local levels. The sugar industry in Egypt depends on two main crops, sugar cane and sugar beet. Statistics indicate a significant development in the extent of the contribution of the sugar beet crop to the total production of sugar in Egypt, where its contribution rate reached 67.7 % of sugar production in Egypt in 2021 out of the total sugar production of 2.712 million tons of sugar, while the contribution of the sugar cane crop declined and one most gradually decreased until it reached about 32.3% in 2021 While the local consumption of sugar in Egypt amounted to about 3.320 million tons of sugar, with a sugar gap estimated at about 0.608 million tons of sugar in 2021, and the problem of research in the inability of local production of sugar was able to bridge the increase in the increasing domestic demand, so the state imports 0.830 One million tons of sugar from abroad to fill this gap, which represents a burden on the state’s general budget, especially the foreign currency, which the import was not able to fill as a result of the pound’s floating against the dollar, in addition to the problem of population inflation in Egypt and the population increase at a rate of 2.5% annually.
